A dog named Grant seems like the perfect dog at first sight. With his beautiful gray exterior, stunning eyes, and amiable personality, he doesn’t appear any different from the usual dogs we all know and love. He loves meeting new people and loves the spotlight—so the people at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary were quickly drawn to him. But with a closer look, anyone can see what’s utterly unique about him.
When he starts walking, you’ll immediately notice why his arrival surprised his rescuers. You see, Grant doesn’t have his back feet.
The remarkable newcomer lost his feet during an accident when he was just a puppy. But like any persistent pup, he didn’t allow this setback to hold him down. Despite his disability, he adapted well to his demise.
When he was two years old, he got around by himself like a pro. And even though he couldn’t go on long walks, he was happy with just hanging out by the front desk, in an office or a yard just as perfectly.
He was able to establish friendships with humans and dogs alike. Not long after, someone came along and fell in love with him. Two weeks after arriving at the shelter, a lovely woman named Leslie Carney, together with her son Jacen, expressed their desire to adopt him. And together with his new life, he also got a cool new name: Yeti.
Leslie was on the lookout for a canine that would be perfect for her family. She was preparing for a life-changing moment as an ‘almost empty-nester’ because only one of her three sons remained to live in her house. On top of her mind was Jacen, who she felt needed somebody to keep him company. She was able to come across Grant’s/Yeti’s story, and it stuck with her.
When she showed Grant’s/Yeti’s photo to Jacen and told him about his particular condition, her kind son fell in love quickly with the doggie who only had two feet. Jacen said that they needed that dog and that they could help him.
The proud mom says that her son fell into his designation as Yeti’s person with ease. He takes his job seriously by making sure he meets all the dog’s needs. Jacen is always alert and is on schedule when it comes to Yeti’s medication, never wanting to be a minute too late or early for anything. Leslie sometimes has to remind him about being too determined when it comes to Yeti’s schedule.
Similarly, Yeti has declared Jacen to be his own, too. When Jacen is in school, the dog will always wait for him; when he’s feeling ill, you can count on Yeti to cozy up next to him in bed.
The unique dog has another best friend called Tigger, whom his family also adopted from Best Friends. There was a bit of sibling jealousy at first, but this only lasted for a few days when he realized that the newcomer wasn’t there to take all the attention. It wasn’t long before they were playing together, as if they’ve known each other for a long time.
Tigger also seems to be wary of his friend’s condition. During playtime, he is careful with Yeti’s back legs. Leslie says that Tigger is the calmer one between the two, which, according to her, is weird and unexpected.
The special husky also loves to sing with Leslie’s niece, while Carly, their bird, barks at him. It was so impressive how much he has become part of them and how familiar he is with ‘his people.’
By adopting Yeti, Leslie feels like she adopted an entire community along with him. While they’re generally social people, she says she doesn’t mind the situation even though she didn’t see it coming. An anonymous donor who is helping Yeti with prosthetics is the first member of their community. She has actively searched for various prosthetic options for her dog when she eventually found a builder.
She says her primary concern was to make sure they get Yeti’s spine realigned while he’s still young. She already made arrangements for his rehab and even ordered him a swim vest when he started hydrotherapy. And as soon as he gets his prosthetics, he has friends waiting at the Southern Utah University.
She has already spoken about Yeti with professors at the university, adding that they are excited to show him off as soon as he gets his bionic legs and show the wonders of science.
Yeti has attracted a lot of fans for sure. Every time he takes a trip on his wagon to get fresh air, people flock all over him to gush over the handsome doggo and learn about his condition. And it looks like he doesn’t mind the attention!
Leslie says that Yeti is such a good and excellent dog, who brought so many blessings in her life upon his arrival.
Yeti still needs help when navigating the stairs and a gentle reminder now and then to slow down so he won’t feel pain later in the day. This doesn’t stop him from jumping out of bed, throwing toys around, and long for snuggles like any other dog. After all, he’s finally safe and secure with his new pack now, and he adores each one of them just as equally.
