Marta Caproni, a Hawaiian resident, was walking her dogs in the Hawaii Volcanos Park when her pets suddenly bolted. They were at the golf course at that time, and the two canines went across the boundary into a heavily vegetated field. Both dogs were off-leash, and Marta was caught off-guard when they took off.
The dog owner followed her pets, calling out to them. One of the dogs came back, but her chocolate lab named Romeo didn’t. Marta went to the field and continued calling out her dog’s name. She looked around, hoping the dog would return. But as darkness fell, she could not see anything and had to go home.
Brave men and women
The very next day, Marta and her boyfriend went back to the area to resume the search for Romeo. The two eventually heard a dog whining, and they tried to locate the source of the faint sound. And when they found a large crack on the land, they saw the lab, stuck deep inside it.
The couple didn’t know what to do next. So they went to the park ranger’s office and asked for help. Despite not having the training to do such a rescue, the brave park rangers, six of them, readily agreed to assist them. They took some ropes and other equipment and headed to the area.
Back to mom’s arms
One park ranger volunteered to be lowered down and retrieve Romeo. They strategically wrapped the rope against his body, and the remaining five rangers gently lowered him down. Soon enough, the ranger got the dog and asked to be pulled up.
As soon as Romeo was back on the surface, Marta couldn’t help herself and ran towards her pet. She hugged her dog tightly as tears flowed down her cheeks. She was so grateful to the rangers for saving her beloved pooch and couldn’t stop thanking them.
Marta said she has learned her lesson and would never take the leash off her dogs when they go out for walks.
