A woman named Dani McKissick spent her regular day off doing her chores when suddenly, a gut feeling hit her. She felt it so strong that it seemed much like a punch. She felt like helping an animal.
Dani started driving toward Harris County Animal Shelter in Houston, Texas. It was a good 45-minute drive, and for her, who suffers from anxiety and panic attacks, it was tough. She felt she needed to turn around and stop all of this.
Adoption? Hmm…
In her mind, she already had two cats and a dog at home, so she didn’t need to adopt anymore; however, she still pushed through. When she arrived, she wandered through rows of homeless cats and dogs, utterly clueless about which animal to adopt.
A shelter staff member approached Dani and led her to Honey, a 9-year-old mixed chow ready to be put down that night. Dani went to Honey’s cage, and immediately everything clicked. Dani felt that this was the animal she had come to adopt.
Honey’s sweet, sad face and brown eyes melted Dani’s heart, who shared that she has a soft spot for older or sick animals. She immediately adopted the dog despite its health condition and other injuries. It only took a day for her to decide to bring Honey home.
Honey perfectly fit into the family and found a caring and loving one. Dani decided to meet Honey’s medical conditions by going to the vet a few times. She made a brilliant decision to be in that shelter that day. Things would not have turned out this way if she had never listened to her gut feeling.
Honey’s impact
Dani and Honey have both made an impact on each other’s lives. As Dani gave Honey a second life, Honey also gave Dani love, safety, and a new addition to the family.
