Spike is a beloved family dog who suffered from his second stroke. Now that he cannot climb the stairs and sleep on his humans’ bed, Spike’s family decided to keep him company at night by sleeping with him on the couch.
Spike’s story
Spike, an English springer spaniel, is now 14 years old. Spike is no longer as energetic as he used to be nine years ago when he first joined the Morris family. But what remained unchanged throughout these years is that Spike loves his family, and his family loves him back so much.
The Morris family could very well remember Spike’s first few days in the household. He loved chasing his tennis ball during the day and snuggling with his family at night. Spike also learned to jump over the stair gate and make his way to his humans’ bedroom. Since then, sleeping with his humans on the bed has become a habit for him.
For the love of Spike
But things changed when Spike suffered from his second stroke. For the first few days, Spike was unable to walk. His dad would have to carry him around the house.
Fortunately, Spike recovered a little and learned how to walk again. The sad thing is that Spike’s legs aren’t strong enough to climb the stairs and won’t join his humans on the bed.
The Morris family couldn’t bear to let Spike sleep on his own on the couch downstairs. They figured that one of them has to sleep with Spike each night so their good boy wouldn’t have to be so lonely.
Spike is lucky enough to have found a family who will stick with him, in sickness and in health. For the Morris family, taking turns sleeping on the couch with Spike is just a simple sacrifice compared to the joy this dog has brought to their lives. They know Spike is old and frail now, and they want their beloved dog to feel how much they love him every moment of the day.
