Belen and Mark were browsing the Animal Haven Facebook page when they came across a post about a 17-year-old dog named Betty. Betty needed a new family because her previous owners gave her away, so the couple decided to foster her since not many people would want to adopt an old dog like her.
Belen and Mark recalled being looked at Betty as if the dog was begging them to take her away from the shelter. Mark believes that Betty must have felt that she would finally get rescued and have a new home because she was calm during the entire car ride.
Mark recalled that Betty did not eat on the first day she got home. The couple said they could tell Betty was nervous because she could not stop pacing back and forth in the whole house.
Belen said that Betty also kept sniffing everything because she did not know if the house she was in is her new home. The couple knew that Betty was unsure if she belonged, so they did what they could to make her feel safe and loved.
Belen and Mark took Betty out for a walk the following morning and saw how happy she looked. Mark shared that Betty eventually adjusted much better and quicker than they thought she would do after being taken out for walks because Betty started following them wherever they went.
Betty became so comfortable that she eventually started waking Mark up at 6 in the morning for her walks. Belen shared that Betty loves making weird, grunting sounds, as if telling them that it is time for her walk.
The shelter contacted Belen and Mark about a couple that was interested in adopting Betty. However, Belen and Mark immediately told them that they would adopt her instead because they knew it would be unfair for Betty if they give her away for the second time.
