There are so many uncertainties when we adopt rescue dogs from animal shelters. Many of these dogs were rescued as strays but a lot of them also came from abusive or neglectful owners. As the person who wants to adopt a dog, we would want to know as much of a dog’s history and background before deciding to adopt.
When Tom and Jane Cannone decided to adopt a dog, they browsed social media pages and websites of nearby animal shelters. Eventually, they ended up looking at a photo of a dog named Boombox. For Tom and Jane, it was love at first sight. However, they also wondered why no one wanted to adopt Boombox. After a little research, Tom and Jane found out that Boombox is deaf.
Despite not having any experience caring for a special needs dog, Tom and Jane were still determined to adopt Boombox and give her the life that she deserves. Tom and Jane knew that it was going to take a little bit of adjusting but they were still willing to give Boombox a loving forever home. After meeting Boombox, Tom and Jane immediately noticed that she was an affectionate dog who loves being with people. The couple suspected that Boombox came from a good home despite knowing nothing about Boombox’s previous owners.
Tom and Jane also took Boombox to the veterinarian for a health assessment. Overall, Boombox is a healthy dog. However, the veterinarian soon realized that Boombox knew something really special. The veterinarian tried a hand signal command that meant “sit” in dog sign language. Boombox followed the veterinarian’s command and everyone was amazed that Boombox was trained to know sign language.
Tom and Jane were pleasantly surprised that they can actually give Boombox commands even when she’s deaf. The couple really doesn’t know the extent of Boombox’s knowledge about the sign language she learned but they’re slowly figuring out what Boombox knows. For example, whenever Tom or Jane holds a finger up and motions to Boombox, she knows that it’s time to go out for a walk.
Tom and Jane are continuing to research other hand signs and try to see if Boombox responds to any of the commands. Boombox may be deaf but she’s an incredibly sweet and smart dog. Tom and Jane feel so lucky that they were able to adopt Boombox. Here’s an amazing video about Boombox and how her new family learned about her special talent.
