Hearing abused dog stories always brings a pang to the heart for many. But hearing about their recovery and their beautiful comeback is a real inspiration.
Baxter, a 9-pound Pomeranian, suffered severe abuse from his previous owner. A concerned citizen called for help when she heard commotion and cries in the house next door. Rescuers came fast, and there they met this poor dog lying unconscious on the floor.
They brought him to the Nebraska Humane Society’s ICU. Physical tests and assessments show that the beating he received caused not only outer damage but also inflicted severe issues in his brain. The rescuers, volunteers, and health workers worked to ease Baxter’s pain. They kept him warm and made sure that he wouldn’t feel alone.
Miraculously, after being comatose, he finally woke up!
This 2-year-old dog won’t be able to walk straight again, rendering him limp for the rest of his life. Holding his head upright would be difficult. And teaching him dog routines and antics would be close to impossible. Baxter also needs to be on a unique, strict diet. Given all these, this dog remained solid and full of will to live.
Through the help of the people around him, Baxter bloomed into a healthy dog. His story went viral and inspired many people. He became the media representative of the Nebraska Humane Society. He helps educate the people on proper animal care. Pam, the vice president of the said organization, found Baxter’s story admirable, and eventually, she adopted him.
Baxter lived a full 12 happy 12 years. He made an impact on everyone who heard his story. Some bills related to animal cruelty and fundraising events are products of his life.
The lives he touched and the fellow dogs who received help and love through the advocacy he represents will be a legacy.
