Dane Orozco had already retired from service when his leg got infected. The 42-year-old man from Los Angeles sought help from multiple doctors, but they all told him one thing – his leg had to be amputated. If he didn’t, the infection would spread and might cost him his life.
The veteran had no choice and had his affected limb removed. While the operation saved his life, it caused him severe depression and anxiety. He felt he was not the man he used to be. For months, his family and friends saw him spiral downward. They sought help for him, but none seemed to work.
Pure joy
One of his colleagues asked him what made him happy. The very first thing that popped into his mind was dogs. He used to have canine pets, and he remembered how he genuinely enjoyed playing with them and having them around.
Although he wasn’t ready to adopt a dog right away, he decided to visit the local shelter and spend some time with rescue animals there. True enough, he felt joy when he saw all the canines inside. But one pooch stood out from the rest, and it was a three-legged German Shepherd.
Instant attraction
The moment Dane saw the amputated dog, he knew he would be taking him home. He instantly felt a kinship with him. He asked the shelter staff what happened to the pooch, and they told him he got into a car accident. His leg was beyond repair and had to be amputated.
Soon, Dane adopted the dog and named him Kane. Having him around took the veteran’s mind off his own injury. He saw how happy the dog was despite his condition. The pooch would run around as if he had four legs. This inspired Dane so much.
The two are now inseparable. The new dog owner said whenever he feels down, he just looks at his pet and immediately feels better.
