When eight-year-old Jake arrived at the Burlington Animal Shelter in North Carolina, he had just gotten out of an unfortunate situation. His previous owner had unexpectedly passed away and left him locked in his crate for days. Thankfully, first responders went to his home for a welfare check and immediately freed him upon seeing his situation.
However, since Jake’s other family members couldn’t keep him, they decided to turn him over to the shelter instead. Darlene Cox, a customer service supervisor at the facility, shared that the senior pup was understandably scared and distressed when he first came to Burlington.
The staff did what they could to make him feel comfortable in the shelter, and fortunately, it wasn’t long before a kind-hearted family came along to adopt him. For the next several weeks, Jake was loved and cared for in his new home, but it seemed that luck wasn’t on his side.
His new family suddenly lost their house, forcing them to return the rescue pup to the Burlington Animal Shelter. The staff then placed him with two foster families in hopes of keeping him out of his cold kennels in the facility. However, both of them didn’t work out, as well, because Jake couldn’t get along with their cats.
Darlene and the other shelter workers were devastated at the rescue dog’s unfortunate situation. Luckily, things instantly took a turn for the better when Jake’s story caught media attention. He was featured in several local news outlets, and from there, dozens upon dozens of applications came flooding in for him.
Among the sea of interested adopters was Kim Murray. As soon as she saw Jake’s photos online, she immediately knew she wanted to give him a permanent home. So she sent the shelter an email right away, and after getting a response, she was at Burlington Animal Shelter within an hour.
Jake was taken home that same day and joined Kim’s two other senior dogs at home. Look at the happy pup’s adoption day here.
