On April 2, 2022, a young boy wandered away from his Houston home, causing widespread concern and a frantic search. But luck was on his side because his four-legged buddy accompanied him throughout the day.
Five-year-old Jose Muñoz, a boy with Down Syndrome, and his mother, Jasmine Martinez, took a nap at their home one afternoon. When Martinez woke up, her son was gone. She looked around the house but couldn’t find her son.
Consequently, she contacted the Houston Police Department, reasoning that Jose had possibly left the door open before wandering away.
In the end, Jose was found a short time later, around a one-half mile from his home, when witnesses saw him wandering alongside a section of railroad lines in the region. And when the police were able to apprehend the child, the family’s 1-year-old German shepherd, Alejandro, stood by his side, doing his duty.
Alejandro, who the family adopted as a puppy, formed a deep link with Jose ever since he became a family member. According to Jose’s sister, Samantha Muñoz, she wasn’t surprised to hear that Alejandro walked alongside her brother the entire time.
German shepherds are members of the canine herding group. So when Alejandro noticed a member of his herd go astray, his instinct was to follow along and stick with Jose.
According to the Houston Police Department, Sgt. Ricardo Salas, Alejandro understood he had to accompany Jose because he was doing something he wasn’t supposed to do. What astounded the police more was how Alejandro remained at the boy’s side even after they arrived.
When Sgt. Salas seated Jose in his patrol unit so he could enjoy some air conditioning. Alejandro leaped into the patrol car as soon as he turned around!
Thankfully, Jose finally reunited with his family, thanks to the prompt actions of the Houston Police Department and a very faithful doggo. The Houston Police Department stated that the family wouldn’t file any charges. In addition, Jose’s mother also shared that she will place kid protective locks on their doors.
But everyone would agree that Alejandro is responsible for keeping Jose safe. If the boy were alone, things could turn out worse. Alejandro should get lots of treats and extra attention for being a reliable and loyal companion!
