Living in a shelter is better than being on the streets, but it doesn’t mean it is an ideal situation. Staying in a cramped space with dozens of other canines can be quite stressful for some dogs. So, the mission for all shelters is to find their rescue animals a good home as soon as possible.
This is also why the staff at a shelter in Chattanooga, Tennessee, was eager to find a family for a brindled dog named Big Mac. He had been staying with them for almost nine months, which was taking a toll on him. He was their longest resident so far.
Untrusting
According to the shelter workers, they don’t know much about the history of Big Mac. But it was evident that it was not a good past.
It showed in the dog’s character. He didn’t trust anyone, especially strangers, and would shy away whenever someone tried to come close. He was also scared of other canines and frightened of visiting new places.
His lack of affection towards the shelter visitors was most likely why no one showed interest in adopting him. And every day he spent longer in the facility made his trauma even worse. Something had to be done.
Foster fail
One of the shelter volunteers felt pity for Big Mac and boldly decided to foster him. The kindhearted woman knew it would be difficult to gain the dog’s trust. But amazingly, the pooch started to open up just a few days after living in his foster home.
He became a completely different dog. The pooch responded positively to his foster mom’s show of affection and relaxed. He finally found someone he could trust. The volunteer soon fell in love with Big Mac and decided to adopt him.
After the adoption papers were signed, the shelter staff lined up outside their facility. They clapped and cheered as Big Mac made his final walk out of the shelter and went to his forever home. Everyone was so happy the dog finally became a part of a loving family.
