LA Fire Department informed local charitable rescue group Hope For Paws about a stray dog that sought refuge in their training facility. According to the firefighters, the animal avoided humans and kept hiding under cars when anyone approached. Not wanting to risk the dog’s safety, they asked for help in securing it.
Rescuer and group founder Eldad Hagar responded to the call and drove to the training facility. There, he met with the firefighters managing the area. They let Eldad in and directed him to where the dog usually stayed on the facility grounds.
The rescuer saw how thin the dog was, so he knew exactly how to gain its trust. He offered the animal bits of cheeseburger, tossing the pieces near it. Eldad let the dog eat while he patiently kept his distance and waited for the animal to be more comfortable with his presence.
Once the dog realized that the rescuer had food, it slowly inched closer to Eldad. The animal, however, still felt uneasy, so the rescuer thought of the best way to secure it. While the dog ate, Eldad quietly positioned a gentle snare.
Eldad laid the gentle snare on the ground and placed food leading to it. This caused the dog to gradually come closer until it was within reach. The rescuer then easily looped the snare onto the distracted animal while it ate.
The rescuer decided to name the female dog Waka. Noting the soot and ash covering Waka, Eldad quickly secured her in his vehicle and readied her for transport. He thanked the firefighters and drove from the facility to the CARES veterinary clinic.
Waka received a much needed bath at CARES. Once all the soot and ash washed off her, the dog’s fur regained its white color. After also getting a clean bill of health, Waka was ready for her fresh start.
Local foster home Wags and Walks then offered to take Waka in. They also committed to help the dog find her new fur parents. Along with her foster siblings, Waka continued enjoying her new beginning while hoping to soon find her forever home.
