Despite all the positive stories we hear on Pit Bulls, it is undeniable that the famous dog breed still has a bad reputation for being vicious and dangerous. But as dog lovers, we will not stop spreading amazing and heartwarming stories about them.
Abby Leathers is a 28-year-old woman from Lawrenceville, Georgia, who lives with her Pit Bull. A Batman fan, she named her dog after the protagonist’s alter ego, Bruce Wayne.
One morning, Abby made tea and played an episode of Batman, her favorite series, without any clue that the rest of the day would be far from what she imagined. While watching, she heard Bruce whining and scratching at their front door.
Abby thought that Bruce’s behavior was odd and mildly annoying. Still, she gave in and went to check the cause of the commotion. As soon as she opened the door, Bruce bolted out and ran to a nearby pond.
Abby quickly followed her dog until she ended up at the edge of the pond. A few feet away from where Bruce stood, she saw something move in the water. It was an older woman, and she was half-naked and confused.
Quickly, Abby went into the water and carefully walked towards the stranger. She spoke a language she didn’t understand and was possibly deaf, so communication was nearly impossible. However, Abby maintained her presence of mind. She pulled the woman out of the water, wrapped her with a bathrobe, offered her hot tea, and held her hand, hoping the gestures would suffice.
The paramedics and police arrived after Abby called 911 and said they received a call about a missing woman who lived nearby. They confirmed later that the missing woman was what Abby found at the pond, and they all reunited afterward.
Because of Bruce’s valiance, someone’s family need not worry about their loved one getting lost, hungry, or hurt. Abby Leathers couldn’t be prouder that her dog lived up to his name.
Aside from being a real-life hero, Bruce is also a hero to Leathers by saving her in his little way every day, the same way our dogs lift our spirits when we are down or tired. They remind us how we can find joy in simple things. In that case, all dogs are heroes. We also hope that this lovely story continues to challenge misconstruing assumptions about dogs like Bruce.
