When police officers are searching for a missing person, there’s always a great chance that they will turn to dogs for help. After all, canines have a superb sense of smell, which is useful for tracking an object or an individual.
In North Carolina, an English Labrador named Maverick helped the authorities find a missing child. Thanks to this earnest dog, this story has a happy ending.
The reliable Lab
Two parents reported to the authorities that their kid is missing. This was obviously a job for Maverick.
All Maverick needed was just a scent to get things done. Joshua Dye, the Deputy Sheriff for the Union County Sheriff’s Office, said that the kid ran the risk of encountering a bad situation. The search party needed to act fast, so it put the dog on a scent article, which was the kid’s blanket.
Deputy Sheriff Dye added that they tracked the spots along a pretty busy highway. They went down to a few roads and then spotted the kid, who actually came out of the woods.
Seeing the search party, the missing kid came to them. The Labrador, on the other hand, ran right up to the kid.
The Deputy Sheriff said that without the dog’s keen nose and relentless attitude, they would have had a harder time searching for the boy. Apparently, they pinged the kid’s cellphone, but unfortunately, the said device was off. Without Maverick, the search party would not have anywhere to start.
The importance of police canines
Deputy Sheriff Dye added that operations like this showed why dogs like Maverick are valuable to law enforcement. He explained that they did a lot of training with the dog to make sure that he would always be on top of his game.
Maverick is not only trained in tracking but also in article searches, narcotics detection, and basic obedience.
