Firefighters are known for going beyond their scope of work. They don’t just deal with fires; they also venture into other dangerous situations where there are lives that need to be saved.
The Waldens Creek Volunteer Fire Department got a distress call about a pooch that was stranded in a pit. Little did the firefighters know that the spot where the dog was, possibly had rattlesnakes and even territorial bears. Nevertheless, they accepted the mission and successfully accomplished it.
Into the dark pit
The fire station received the call around two in the morning. Initially, the firefighters were confused over whether the pup fell into a well or a cave. Steve Schmidt, the fire department’s assistant chief, knew that they couldn’t do anything until daylight.
Once the sun shone, Schmidt and his team set out to meet with the pup’s owner. Apparently, the man was hunting the previous night with his dog named Storm.
Thankfully, the dog had a tracker. This made it easy for Schmidt’s team to pinpoint the pup’s location.
Saving the pup
Schmidt’s team hiked down the steep terrain to get to the cave’s mouth. The dog responded to his owner’s call by barking. This was a good sign for everyone.
The cave had a 35-foot drop. To make matters worse, the place was filled with copperhead snakes. The rescuing party also believed that the cave was a bear den.
The team lowered two rescuers who then managed to locate Storm. Surprisingly, the dog was unhurt despite tumbling down to the bottom of the pit.
Schmidt also went down the hole to join the two rescuers. They slipped the pup into a harness, so they could safely lift him back to the surface. After almost two hours of the rescue operation, Storm was reunited with his beloved human.
