Kathryn LaRoche recently lost her 20-year-old senior cat. This pandemic has made coping with the loss even more complicated, given that she has been living alone. Her cat’s passing has opened her heart to adopting another animal companion.
Determined to fill her heart with a new animal companion, Kathryn browsed through the Indy Humane website, where Sonny, a senior dog, drew her attention. The shelter rescued Sonny from the streets of Indianapolis, where he was living as a stray. Despite having been chipped, attempts of contacting her previous owners went unsuccessful.
The dog’s sweet gray face staring back at her through the screen made Kathryn fall in love with him in an instant. She decided to meet him immediately and arranged for a meet-and-greet with the shelter.
Days leading up to the meeting, Kathryn prepared everything Sonny might need at home if she decides to adopt him. From toys to a bed and just about everything she can think of the senior dog might need. But of course, her heart knew that Sonny is on his way to his forever home – hers.
The day of the meeting came, and the shelter volunteer ushered their oldest rescue outside. The shelter gave Kathryn half an hour to get to know Sonny. From the moment Kathryn laid eyes on the 16-year old pup, she knew that he was going home with her – she was filing the adoption paper within five minutes.
Sonny’s advanced age would be difficult for him to find a home but having cared for a senior cat, Kathryn knows how rewarding senior pets can be. The two were surely a match-made-in-heaven, and so they drove home from the shelter that day.
With her heart full, Kathryn thought no one could be happier than her; she was wrong. Inside the very same car she was driving, someone was beaming with joy. Sonny can’t contain how he felt and was smiling throughout their journey, knowing that he was on his way to his forever home. Kathryn captured the moment and posted it online for everyone to see.
The two have since been enjoying each other’s company. Kathryn never planned to make Sonny a bed dog, but the pup made it clear from day one that he wanted to snuggle up with her under the sheets.
Despite the mild demeanor that came with his age, Sonny enjoys playing with his toys and looks forward to his daily walks. Every passing day, Kathryn could not be more thankful to have Sonny by her side. He has been her dream dog and has devoted herself to giving Sonny the best time of his life.
