When you adopt a rescue dog, you make them feel that they deserve to be loved. Most of these pups have been abused, neglected, and abandoned by their previous owner. They’re used to getting the shorter end of the stick, and the only time they experience comfort and affection is when they’re rescued and turned over to shelters.
A rescue dog’s journey doesn’t end when they’re taken off the streets. In fact, that’s just an introduction to the next few chapters of their lives. What happens in those chapters depends on whether they get adopted or not. Some shelters kill dogs that can’t find their forever parents so they can rescue more. It’s heartwrenching, but that’s one of the cards rescue dogs are forced to deal with.
The value of adoption
That reality is the main reason why animal rights activists and volunteers are vocal about the importance of adoption. When you adopt a rescue pup, you’re not only helping them. You’re also saving dogs who are locked up and are forced to give birth to litter after litter even though their bodies no longer want to.
Among those who are active in getting people to adopt instead of shop are Arnold Schwarzenegger, Ryan Reynolds, Selena Gomez, and Jennifer Aniston. One would think they’d be buying dogs from expensive breeds, but they opted to give rescue dogs a forever home.
Living with a rescue dog
These celebrities share stories of what living with a rescue dog is like, in their effort to encourage people to adopt. Among these Hollywood stars is Chris Evans, who met his four-legged pal while filming. He thought Dodger was a trained movie dog, but when he discovered that canine star was looking for a home, he immediately adopted him.
Hilary Swank has also been frequently posting photos of her rescue dogs. She even put up an animal shelter to help more dogs find forever homes.
