Lumen, a Great Dane, was born deaf and without toes on her hind legs. She wasn’t normal, that’s for sure, but she’s lovely. Unfortunately, her owner thought otherwise so he placed her in a cardboard box and left her to die on the side of a very busy road.
Thanks to a few Good Samaritans, she didn’t have to stay long at such a risky place and her life was saved. And from Mexico, Lumen traveled to the US, where her foster moms Christine and Ashley waited for her arrival.
With everything that happened in a short time, Lumen felt so scared. It took her a few days before she figured out she was finally free from danger. She was lucky she got a foster family who understood what she needed and gave her all the time that she needed.
The puppy had no idea where she was or what she needed to do. Luckily for her, Atticus, one of her foster dog siblings, was there to teach her how to get by. He became her trainer and she was happy to learn from him.
Lumen started to receive all the help she needed but the vets gave her no more than six months to live. They also said she will only suffer even if she lived longer so she better be put to sleep. Christine and Ashley, however, disagreed and decided to seek a second opinion from a specialist.
It took at least two surgeries before the dog was able to stand and walk properly. She, however, needed prosthetics so she won’t hurt herself playing outside. And while she had to wait to get a pair that perfectly fit her and was durable enough to carry her weight, she was overjoyed when she finally got her prosthetics.
Under Christine and Ashley’s care, Lumen defied the odds and grew up to be a happy dog. The six months the vets gave her to live wasn’t enough for her to enjoy her life so she thrived.
Today, Lumen spends her happy days with her new mom Atlas. She lives in a beautiful home, gets all the tasty treats, and sleeps in a comfy bed. She’s now a spoiled girl because she deserves to be.
