This dog named Roxy arrived at the Thames Valley Police (TVP) in 2017. Five years later, the formerly abandoned dog is now working as an explosives detection dog in the United Kingdom.
Before arriving at TVP, Roxy was abandoned by her former family for still unknown reasons. Despite this, Roxy is now thriving in her new environment because of the goodness she experienced from strangers.
When the dog arrived at TVP, volunteers from the West Hatch Animal Center saw the dog as a potential rescue dog. According to Sue Dicks, the group’s supervisor, the dog is good to be around with people and other dogs. Aside from this, Roxy showed excellent ball focus, which is essential in training rescue dogs.
Since Roxy has what it takes to be a rescue dog, she underwent a 10-week training under Avon and Somerset Police. During the training, the dog got exposed to different hurdles to gauge whether she is a good fit for a rescue dog.
One of the hurdles is learning which scents to sniff out and provide alerts to her handlers for potential crime. It was police officer Camilla Carter who handled the dog’s training. In her short dealing with the dog, the police officer expressed happiness to see the dog’s growth.
For Camilla, Roxy showed excellent work ethic and dedication to training, which are essential ingredients to be successful at this craft. Besides this, the dog likewise has the agility and quickness of thinking, making her an ideal rescue dog.
After the training, Roxy received a go signal to start working as a rescue dog. Like during the training, it was Camilla who handled the dog. The two have the daunting task of ensuring the safety of the people they seek to serve. Aside from this, Roxy also helps in detecting the presence of bombs.
