A 62-year-old man from Southampton, UK, was admitted to the hospital due to a bad case of pneumonia. Andy Szasz, a cancer survivor, didn’t have any idea how severe his case was until he stopped breathing at the hospital. Due to critical conditions, doctors gave him medication for sedation.
The medical personnel estimated that he would be comatose for the next couple of weeks. However, a visit from his best friend changed everything. Andy had rescued and adopted a schnauzer-poodle mix named Teddy in 2012. The two have become inseparable ever since.
Andy’s wife Estelle would have Teddy on a video chat while Andy was in a coma but knew the virtual interaction wasn’t enough. Furthermore, hospitals don’t allow pets inside their wings. They allow and even encourage bringing pets on the hospital grounds to help the patient’s recovery.
However, Estelle got Teddy his special permission. Finally, Teddy was allowed to see his beloved Andy – who was already four days into his induced coma. According to Estelle, it was like watching a movie scene unfolding slowly. Ted barked at his beloved human a few times, and Andy stirred.
Estelle added that the visit motivated Andy to recover faster. When Andy fully woke up from his coma a few hours after the visit, all he could talk about was his Teddy. What Andy and Teddy have is something so beautiful and profound. Their bond is just one of a kind.
Andy even made it home to celebrate Christmas with his family – thanks to Teddy’s incredible love for his human and vice versa. The bond between humans and animals is limitless. It is something that scientists can’t fully explain, rather than it’s a ‘pack’ thing. But we know that what Andy and Ted have is a beautiful thing called love.
